Dr Rothwell undertook his medical training in Auckland, New Zealand, prior to commencing advanced general surgical training in Sydney. He gained wide surgical experience at different surgical centres during this time; focussing on upper gastrointestinal and bariatric surgery.

Dr Rothwell was admitted to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2009 as a Specialist Surgeon. He undertook surgical positions refining his advanced laparoscopic skills and received accreditation in endoscopic procedures by the Gastrointestinal Society of Australia.

Dr Rothwell received a Masters of Surgical Science in 2012 from the University of Adelaide and then commenced a Bariatric and Advanced Laparoscopic Surgical Fellowship at the Flinders Medical Centre and the Adelaide Bariatric Centre.  During this time Dr Rothwell came to understand the importance of obesity as a disease, and the effect that obesity has on a person’s physical and mental health.

Dr Rothwell has extensive experience in primary and revisional bariatric surgery and in 2015 began working as a specialist Bariatric Surgeon in Adelaide. During this time he undertook, presented and published research in the field of bariatric surgery. Dr Rothwell was awarded the Obesity Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand’s Young Research Prize in 2013.

Dr Rothwell moved to Brisbane in 2016 after being appointed to the Ipswich General Hospital as a Staff Specialist Surgeon. He also holds an academic appointment as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland.

Dr Rothwell is a current member of OSSANZ and offers primary and revisional bariatric surgery, and laparoscopic general surgical procedures as well as gastroscopy and colonoscopy.
